More on IMAP/SMTP settings

I was having trouble sending mail with my aim.com account, but fortunately I was able to walk down the hall and talk with the head of mail development, who informed me of the error of my ways...

You must use smtp.aim.com:587 for sending mail, NOT smtp.aol.com. On the IMAP side, you should use imap.aim.com:143, although imap.aol.com will still work. When I made this change, things worked fine for me.

He also mentioned that SSL/TLS is a work in progress, so you might be able to use SSL/TLS for your aim.com SMTP and IMAP - but you might not.

Great work!  Thanks for the info!

Next time you see head of mail, can you ask him about accounts where the AIM screenname is a former AOL screenname and login to the webmail gives the "Account Cancelled" message with Code C0FE0229 ?

To add insult to injury, I am told that "Coming soon: Use screen names from cancelled accounts for free AIM.com email!"    Yeah -- that's what I was trying to use, and had logged into before. . .

Thanks again for the SMTP info.

The AIM mail now lets me login to webmail & IMAP without error -- great! -- but my second screenname, ShiningWom, can login to webmail but gets the same error  (account suspended) when trying to login via IMAP.

One step, then another.  Thanks

Support for former AOL screen names should be working now.  You will need to sign into webmail or AOL.com portal first to acknowledge the aim TOS before using Open IMAP.

One addtional comment, SSL/TLS for AIM and AOL accounts has been working since last year.
