AIM Mail IMAP settings

IMAP access is now turned on for all aim.com accounts. Set your IMAP client to use imap.aol.com, port 143, and use your AIM name as the username.

Yay. Now we can use Mozilla Thunderbird with this. :)

Is there rate limiting involved for security purposes (bruteforce cracking for example)?

Looks like smtp.aol.com still needs an aol.com username as the from address -- an aim.com address won't do.   Compeditors offer smtp, so we shall see.

The Sent Mail mailbox is working wierdly. If you send mail through the online client, in the software client (mine is Apple Mail) it shows up as "unread/new". Is there a way this can be fixed?

Ugh, you seem to be right.  Can't get smtp.aol.com to function.  So you can get email but not send it?  That seems to be a real big oversight on AOL's part.  Oops!

It works really well for me on thunderbird. I've noticed some people are confused, you need to set the smtp settings like this:
Smtp.aol.com    Port: 587   Username:Your AIM NAME
Then you use your AIM password.

Hmm? I can not get SMTP to work on Thunderbird. Are you using username or username@aim.com? SSL or No SSL? What port?

It would be nice if juberti would at least read his comments and tell us what we are doing wrong getting SMTP to work... maybe share the setting we are supposed to use...  sigh...

I got everything to work on my Thunderbird with AIM Mail. Instead of smtp.aol.com, use smtp.aim.com. It does work. I just tested it. But there is one problem, I checked my sent folder and it says the email was sent 2 times. So it might be sending the email twice. Not sure though. You can IM me if you have any questions. xBxCxMx Cheers :-)

I got the send mail to work by just using another e-mail as the reply (smtp.gmail.com) seems to work fine, and just pick the same username with them and you don't have to worry about the person you're replying to knowing who you are

I got it to work in Mozilla Thunderbird! If it helps, here is what I did:
Display Name: (REAL NAME for example Joe Somebody)
SERVER TYPE: IMAP Mail Server
INCOMING SERVER NAME: imap.aim.com
OUTGOING SERVER NAME: smtp.aim.com
USE SECURE CONNECTION: NEVER
USE SECURE AUTHENTICATION: NO (UNCHECKED)
EMAIL ADDRESS: Something@AIM.com
REPLY TO ADDRESS: Something@AIM.com
