Nice!!! I tried signing in with an AIM sn that was also an AOL and it doesn't let me send mail with aim.com  Eeek I wanted to brag haha.

I tried signing in and had no luck. My AIM Account appeared to be suspended after trying to sign in. Even though i havent used the AIM account in a good few months. Can anyone resolve this issue?

Can you give more information about your statement that IMAP access is available? My attempts to use imap.aol.com with an AIM Screen Name are failing. I can log in through webmail just fine.

Yeah... I'm having issues logging in with my AIM account to imap.aol.com:143, although it works for my AOL. I'll post an update when I have more info.

According to the Beta documentation, AIM Mail doesn't support IMAP.

As far as I know, we are still planning on offering IMAP access, although apparently it is not switched on yet... here's a quote from a recent eWeek article about AIM Mail:
"AOL already is planning additional features for the full launch of AIM Mail. The service will support the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) standard so that users can access their AIM Mail accounts from other e-mail clients, Ben-Yoseph said."

I applaud the effort to have IMAP access.  I so wish that other services offered that.  Like Gmail only having POP3, and yahoo's POP3 with their upgraded pay mail service.  With such large capacity mailboxes, it only makes sense to have IMAP server side mail storage.

Now, a question I have, is will the address book be shared out via LDAP?  Could that be a possibility for down the line if not planned for initial rollout?

Don't expect IMAP IMAP from AIM mail, because the odds are very high that what you will get AOL IMAP, as implemented for AOL mail, Netscape.net and so on.   While it works with an IMAP client, there are many IMAP features that aren't implemented to standard.

It's my guess that AOL isn't doing IMAP because others do POP3.  AOL is doing IMAP because that is the kludge they implemented to open up their mail system years ago, and it can be offered with little development cost.

IMAP is superior to POP3 in every respect. IMAP can be made to emulate POP3 100%, whereas the reverse is not possible.

Eventually IMAP will completely replace POP3 once it becomes economical to do so.

Most free email services don't offer non-browser access to their systems for security and advertising reasons.

Anonymous said...

If IMAP4 is not yet economical, then that is one respect it is inferior to POP3.

I would prefer good IMAP access to mail servers than POP3 access.  I undertand the benefits.

But AOL IMAP has limits, and is not full IMAP. My only point.

When I log in it tells me I only have 250MB of mail space...not even close to 2GB...

Error Code: C0FE1801
Is the error code I am getting.  This error refers to a problem with the site, it is not anything to do with anyones computer.

I cant log on to my email either!!!!!

i cannot access my mail either!

C0FE1801

I've used AOL for about 15 years and not being able to get my mail today -- 06.01.06 -- is just about the last straw. Between selling our names to spammers and providing questionable service, how long do they think we will put up with this?

AIM Mail is Out all right!  Out of ORDER!!  Where's our mail???

Anonymous said...

I'm sick of this error; it happens a lot.  What good is AOL if I can't read my mail??? I can get e-news anywhere.  I'm done with AOL.

Try mail.aol.com

Being someone that has tried a LOT of free e-mail services, AIM Mail really is the pick of the crop.  Yes, the downtime today IS frustrating--and I can understand how even more so it is for full AOL members, which is why I only use mail--but even if I was able to get into the other mail services, they would not always send/receive all of my mail, which lead to a degree of stress and paranoia.

Frustrated Friends:

Just got off with the AOL Tech People - try using

Anonymous said...

that doesn't work either. Can't get email. Haven't been able to get email. And no word from AOL about why or when this might be rectified. Frustration.

Error Code: C0FE1801 <--I get this error (still - been abt a wk now) when I use Internet Explorer to try to access my aolmail.  I popped up Firefox and I can access my email perfectly.  Must be an IE coding problem on AOL's part.  If you don't have firefox (free) you can get the browser at www.mozilla.com.

I can't access my email either, and the tech told me, with no www.,  classic.webmail.aol.com, but it didn't work for me.  Tech said she would report this problem and that was 6-14-06.  She also gave me a number to call the same people m-f 11am to 9:45pm: closed on Tuesdays 6-8 pm, 1-866-787-3668.
I'm going to call Monday.  I NEED MY MAIL!!!!!!!!   This is Crap!

I've been getting the error code for longer than I care to say.  But quite by accident I was able to access my e-mail by clicking on the back arrow.  Then the AOL main page comes up and I click on the mailbox and what do you know, my e-mail page pops up.  AOL get your act together.  This is a real pain.

Anonymous said...

I agree, this is crap!  My checking account is being automatically drafted each month for service I can't use!  AOL get it together....

My netscape e-maiL doesn't work for the first time since 1998, since they changed their website.  Any ideas on how to get access?

If you're having a problem with login & sign on with webmail.aol.com, I figured out how to resolve the
Error Code: C0FE1801
or
1272-webmail-vma-20061201-230817

If the alternative classic.webmail.aol.com doesn't work, try going to this link:

https://my.screenname.aol.com/

then just sign in as normal and it will ask you some security questions and take you to a page that asks if you've received a 'confirmation e-mail' to re-activate your aol, netscape, or aim e-mail account (screenname).  Click on the appropriate link to have aol re-send that confirmation e-mail to that same account or an alternate e-mail account you may have.  The final step is to click the "Sign Out"  link on the top of the page.
I used the first link to re-send an e-mail to my @aol.com address & my roommate used the link to change his e-mail address from an @netscape.com address to an @aim.com and both options allowed us to finally access webmail.aol.com and/or mail.aol.com in seconds.
Hope this helps you!
