Cool AIM Stuff of the Week

A bunch of things going on, so I'm a bit light on the updates this week. I'll be doing a mailbag early next week. In the meantime, here's a few neat AIM-related things I found while poking around on the web:
  • AIM Buddy Icon Maker on the Web
Not quite as cool as the JAMS IconMaker plugin, but this website allows you to take just about any image (there is a 300K size limit), upload it, and get it back as an AIM buddy icon that you can simply click to set as your own buddy icon. Works in AIM 5.9 and all other AIM versions that support the aim:BuddyIcon URL (AIM Triton users should use JAMS :)
  • Personal AIM server
Written from scratch by a bored AIM user, this personal AIM server allows you to have your own private AIM network. It is provided as source code (VB 6.0), so you can look it over and/or extend it to do what you want. To make your AIM client use it, simply run it and change the AIM server address in the connection preferences to the IP address of the machine running this AIM server. It only supports a subset of the AIM protocol, and so AIM Triton can't use it, but it's quite interesting nonetheless. Some other interesting stuff on this site as well.
  • AIM Business Cards
While looking for information about AIM SMS short codes, I found this page which allows you to create business cards with your AIM screenname, which you can then print out from your computer. Kind of short on the options, but maybe of interest to someone.

I've known about the personal AIM server for quite a while now...  Thought it would always be something in the dark corner of the internet...  It really is nice though.  I think the first post I read about it said it would be great for businesses, and I have to agree with that!

Jams settings buttons still don't work on the new version of Triton.

I just want to confirm what the poster below me said, the settings buttons do not work in the latest beta version released today.

Yeah, the beta that went out today did not have the settings fix, some other things took priority. Look for it in the next one.

are u guys gonna do anything about the fonts on aim triton, cuase they are really defualtish and ordinary.

"=" chars inside <a href>'s in AIM profiles do not work anymore. is this going to be fixed? for example, if you had an ebay item link in your profile.. once you load AIM it will get rid of the "=" sign at "&item=1234512345"

Icon makers aren't gonna help my problem.  When am I going to see the release that reduces memory usage?  aim6.exe and aolsoftware.exe hijack my entire machine.  With the memory hogging and the constant ads running, AIM is so obtrusive it 's lost its usefulness.

I have a wierd problem with this version. When i backspace over text in the chat window the text remains for about 5 seconds. It is only in this version because when i uninstall it and reinstall the previous version the glitch isn't there anymore. This problem only occurs in triton.

Same things are happening to me.  When I backspace the words won't dissapear, it just moves the cursor backwards..

This cursor bug you are seeing is 100% an IE 7 beta bug.  The issue has been reported to MS (Outlook on the Web is suffering from the same issue currently).  Just fyi... (beta software for ya) - Twinsen (www.justsuppose.com)

is there a way to add fonts to your AIM triton other than these default POS ones?
