The max buddy limit has now been raised to 500 Now you can have room for just about anyone you know on your buddylist. (An interesting article here indicates that the average person knows 290 people. So we're giving you close to double that!) Because of some database constraints, the maximum number of buddies in a single group is still 200. We'll see what we can do in the future.
Update 10/08/2005:
It is reported at this site that Yahoo's max buddy limit is 300 and MSN's is only 150. :-D
Update 10/10/2005:
Dare from MSN reports that MSN's limit is actually 300. Nice to meet you Dare!

Woo Hoo!
This is nice. I know on my contact lists my "Recent Buddies" column knocks ppl off as I add more buddies.
thanks!!
I dunno, 500 is kind of low. I know someone that had to get 3 screen names cause he knew so many people.
500 is more than any other services allow. I don't see how anyone can complain and say it's too low.
If you have data on what sizes competitors support, please post. I looked around for a couple minutes last night but couldn't find the figures I was looking for.
I normally use Yahoo Messenger With Voice - it allows a maximum *300* on your messenger list (although you can have more than that in your Yahoo Address Book).
here ya go, in this article it shows the amount of buddies for each IM client.

I want the buddies
Actually, for a while now we've been able to have 300 contacts in MSN Messenger (http://blogs.msdn.com/dareobasanjo/archive/2005/03/22/400360.aspx). And, they can all be in one group ;-)
Well, with MSN and Yahoo announcing upcoming interoperability, it looks like you'll be able to have 300 for MSN + 300 for Yahoo = 600 total. Time to get on the interoperability bandwagon, AIM! Also, to avoid confusion, I was the one who originally linked to Dare's site...

my bad about the total number of MSN buddies, its been noted.
as to izicwe, just because MSN and Yahoo are now a combined service, does not mean that the number of buddies for each buddy list changes.
The MSN (now Windows Live) Messenger Contact list limit was changed at the beginning of October to allow 600 contacts.
